03 – Farewell to the Cave

Feilong was slowly beginning to understand what was happening.
«But… does that mean that when I go through the waterfall, we won’t come back here?» he asked cautiously.
His mother looked at him gently. «That’s right. We’re moving out today. Long Ziran will close the entrance until the next dragon child moves in.»
«Hmm…» Feilong had mixed feelings. He was going to learn to fly – something he had long looked forward to. But leaving the cave forever made him feel afraid.
«Don’t be afraid, Long Fei,» said Long Ziran kindly. «I still remember the feelings I had back then. On the one hand – finally flying! Hooray! But then came the message: you can’t stay here. Try to focus your thoughts on the joy of learning to fly. With flying, many new adventures begin for you. You’ve completed the first stage of your life – now a new one awaits. Try to look forward to it with excitement.»
Feilong thought for a moment, then replied, «Thank you, Long Ziran. Flying – yes! I’ve been looking forward to that.»
«All right, Feilong,» said his mother. «Then pack your things so that we can leave.»
«All right, will do,» said Feilong, turning around and beginning to gather his belongings.
«Are we going to live with Granny?» he asked his mother while packing his books.
His mother paused and looked at him. «You and I will fly to Granny’s home first. There you’ll meet your uncle – my brother – and his family. He has a son who’s a little older than you. He lived here in the cave too.»
She paused briefly before continuing. «Long Ziran’s daughter is getting married. We’ll fly together with Granny and my brother’s family to the wedding. You’ll meet many dragons there.»
Feilong nodded, and his mother went on. «After the wedding, your father will take you with him. You’ll go to live with him.»
Feilong feared the worst. «And you? Where will you live?»
His mother laughed. «I’ll be there too, of course! Your father and I live together at your father’s home. Don’t worry – you won’t get rid of me that easily.» She stroked his head gently with one of her wings.
