38 – Where the Wind Calls Home

Feilong stepped into the house. It was large and filled with light. A gentle wind drifted through the rooms, wrapping everything in a sense of living ease. Father led him through the different areas and introduced the staff.

To Feilong’s surprise, his other grandma was there too, Father’s mother. She greeted him warmly and told him that Grandpa was away for the moment. His aunt also lived here. To Feilong, it felt as though an incredible number of dragons lived in this house.

Father opened a large door. Behind it lay Feilong’s new room. It was airy and bright, with a breathtaking view over the city. Feilong was overwhelmed. So many new impressions, so many unfamiliar faces.

But as he looked around, he felt a pull in his chest. He missed his mother. Father noticed at once.

«You miss your mother, don’t you?» he asked gently.
Feilong nodded silently.

«Didn’t Grandma tell you where Grandpa has gone?»
Feilong shook his head. He was too tired to speak.

«Grandpa has gone to bring your mother here. They’ll be arriving soon.»

Feilong slowly lifted his head. Curiosity won over tiredness.
«Why does Grandpa have to fetch her? Can’t Mama come on her own?»

Father smiled faintly.
«Your mother is a water dragon, my son. The way here passes through high, dry layers of air; she couldn’t make it alone. She needs a water taxi to bring her up here. Grandpa is helping with the transport.»

Feilong sighed softly. «More new information. I can’t take any more. But can Mama even live here?»

«Yes, of course,» Father reassured him. «Her rooms are kept nicely humid. For us it would be far too damp, but for her it’s perfect. While you’re at school, she’ll be working down in the ocean.»

Feilong nodded slowly. He was exhausted, tired from all the new impressions. He just wanted to rest.
