10 – In Tandem with Papa

The father shot straight upwards, with Feilong clinging tightly to his back.
«Wheeee! Aaaah! Wheeeeeee! Aaaah!» cried Feilong in pure delight.
After a few minutes, his father stopped, levelled out, and continued flying more slowly.
«Feilong, my son, are you all right?»
«That was so much fun, Papa!» said Feilong, full of excitement.
«I’m glad you enjoyed it,» said his father, as he untied the cloth.
«We don’t need this cloth any more. Just keep holding on. Spread your wings and flap them in the same rhythm as I do.»
Feilong tried, and it worked surprisingly well. He noticed that they were moving much faster now.
«You’re doing brilliantly!» praised his father.
«What we’re doing right now is called ‘tandem’. The two of us work together to keep flying forward.»
«This is fun too, Papa. But why is there so little air up here? And why does it feel so pleasantly cool?»
«Pleasantly cool? Only you would say that! I find it freezing,» his father replied, explaining that the higher they climbed, the thinner the air became.
«You had more questions earlier. Could you repeat them, please? I was a bit distracted trying to stay steady in the clouds,» said his father.
Feilong thought for a moment. «What are aeroplanes? What are humans? Why mustn’t they see us? But...»
Feilong paused.
«But?» asked his father.
«But what I really want to know is: why didn’t Mama come with us now?»
«Let’s start with the aeroplanes and the humans first. I’ll transfer the information to you by thought. Are you ready?» his father asked.
«Okay, ready!» replied Feilong.
