11 – About Humans and Dragons

 

He received images and information about humans. Humans were the main beings of the Earth. He learned many things: among them that dragons watched over humans, but did not interfere in their lives.

Dragons were meant to remain something mystical to humans. They appeared to them only in rare cases. Humans tended to take advantage of a dragon’s goodwill, which was why dragons preferred to stay hidden.

It was the belief in dragons that gave humans strength. Curiously enough, that belief grew even stronger the more rarely a person encountered a dragon.

«Phew, Papa! That’s quite a lot of information,» complained Feilong.
«Just store the information in your mind for now. You can return to it whenever you need to,» his father replied.

«Now, let’s talk about your mother,» his father began.
«Do you know what others call your mother?»
«You mean Long Hai?»
«Yes, exactly. Hai means ocean. Do you know what an ocean is?»
«Yes, Mama explained that to me. It’s all that water we flew over earlier.»

His father smiled.
«We’re still flying over it, just much higher. You can’t see it from up here.»
«Oh!» Feilong exclaimed in surprise.

His father continued:
«Your mother is Long Hai, the Dragon of the Ocean. Oceans are made of water. Your mother is a water dragon. She feels most comfortable, and finds it easiest, to move in water or in moist surroundings.»

Feilong tried to organise his thoughts.
«That’s why Mama doesn’t stumble in the clouds.»
«Exactly. You know she’s weakened after giving you her energy. For her, the best thing right now is to travel through water. She will have left the clouds and gone down into the depths of the ocean to continue her journey there.»

«Wow!» Feilong tried to picture it, but realised he still lacked too much information to truly understand it.

Instead, he asked:
«Is that why Mama’s and Granny’s scales are so blue-green, like the ocean we saw earlier?»
«You’ve got it,» replied his father.
