24 – The Schools of the Elements

 

«And where have you just come from?» Feilong asked his cousin curiously.

«From the school for water dragons.»

Feilong looked at him questioningly.

«You don’t know what a school is?»

Feilong shook his head, feeling a little embarrassed.

«Once you have learnt to fly, you start going to school. All young dragons fly to school. During the first few years it is a primary school where we learn the basics, such as flying skills, dragon studies, and general knowledge. The schools are specialised according to the elements you carry within you. If you belong to the Water Dragon category, you go to the Water Dragon School. You will probably go to the Wind Dragon School. There you learn the most important things about being a dragon of that kind.»

Feilong nodded.

«What other categories are there?» he asked, curious again.

His cousin replied,
«Let me think ... Later on there are the kinds of dragons connected with Light or Day, and those linked to Darkness or Night. Among the basic kinds there are Nature, Fire, and later, depending on how you develop, Magma. Air and Wind also belong to the basic kinds. Then there is Water. Mixed with Air or Wind, it creates Ice. From Water and Nature many other forms can come into being. And finally, there is Metal, which can also combine with other elements. You’ll learn all about that in school later on. It shan’t be long before you start school yourself.»

Feilong nodded thoughtfully.
