31 – Blood of Ice and Wind

«Long Fei, may I introduce myself?» a dragon addressed him.

In front of him stands an old, dignified-looking dragon with turquoise and white scales that look just like his own.

«My name is Long Bing. You look very much as though you might become my successor one day.»

Feilong was impressed – and suddenly quite nervous. He tried to compose himself.
«Greetings, Long Bing. I only learnt to fly yesterday and don’t yet know much about the other dragons. My father told me that Long Bing is an ice dragon.»

«Your father is a wise man.»

«Hey! I heard that,» came a voice from behind Feilong.

He turned – his father was standing there.
«Greetings, Fenglong,» Long Bing said with a nod.

«Hello, Grandpa. How are you?» Father asked.

Feilong looked at them in surprise. Grandpa?

Long Bing glanced at Fenglong.
«Aren’t you going to introduce us properly?»

«Er – yes, of course.» He turned to Feilong.
«Feilong, may I introduce your great-grandfather: my mother’s father, your other grandma’s father: Long Bing.»

Then he turned back to Long Bing.
«Grandpa, may I introduce your great-grandson: my son, Feilong.»

Feilong looked at his father, serious and slightly annoyed.
«We talked about me possibly becoming an ice dragon, a Long Bing. When I said I liked the sound of it, you brushed it off as if it were unlikely. But you never told me that the Long Bing right in front of me is actually part of our family. Why do I suddenly feel as though you’ve led me onto thin ice?»

Long Bing chuckled softly.
«Because you have great potential to become an ice dragon, young one.»

Feilong couldn’t help it, he burst out laughing.

Long Bing now looked at Father.
«Your son looks just like an ice dragon, and you still haven’t managed to tell him about me?»

«All right, all right, I admit it,» Father confessed.
«I was hoping he might turn out to be a water dragon.»

Behind Feilong came the sound of loud laughter, followed by his mother’s voice:
«Oh, my dear husband! I love you more than anything in the world; apart from Feilong, of course. But since Feilong hatched with those turquoise and mostly pale scales, the chance of him becoming a water dragon was extremely small. I always knew he’d be more wind and ice.»

Feilong sensed that his mother was now standing beside him. He looked up at her.
«Greetings, Long Bing,» she said, nodding respectfully.

«Ah, my dear Long Hai. Greetings. Without you at his side, my grandson would be completely lost.»

«That’s probably true,» Father admitted.

Long Bing looked from Father to Mother.
«Would you mind if I stole your son away for a little while? I’d like to talk with him for a bit.» He turned to Feilong.
«Of course, only if you’d like to talk with me as well.»

Feilong could not explain it, but from the very first moment he had felt the wish to spend time with this dragon, the one who looked so much like him.
«It would be an honour to speak with you, Long Bing.»

«You are my great-grandson, so you may call me Great-Grandpa.»

The two of them found a quiet corner where they could talk undisturbed.
