13 – Long Bing

«Hmm, I like Long Bing,» Feilong thought out loud.
«What do I have to do to become a Long Bing? And why am I called Feilong?»
«That’s two questions at once,» his father said with mock annoyance.
«There’s nothing you can do. You simply have to wait. Neither you nor anyone else can influence what kind of dragon you will become once you’re grown up.
It’s your genes alone that decide that. The same goes for dragons whose parents both belong to the same category.
My parents are Storm and Wind Dragons. For a long time, it wasn’t clear what kind of dragon I would become. As a young dragon, I had scales in both storm-grey and silver-white. Over time, this changed until all my scales were silver-white, and it became clear that I was a Wind Dragon.»
His father paused briefly, then continued:
«Your mother’s parents both belong to the Water Dragons. Yet for a long time it wasn’t clear what kind of Water Dragon she would become, whether a River Dragon, an Ocean Dragon, a Cloud Dragon ... There are many specialisations among the Water Dragons. She grew into an Ocean Dragon, while your uncle, her brother, became a fully trained Water Dragon, just as I am a fully trained Wind Dragon.»
