14 - Feilong’s Name

«Wow, that’s complicated,» Feilong remarked.
«But why am I called Feilong?»

His father smiled to himself.
«Your mother and I wanted to give you a proper name. There are dragon families where the children are simply numbered: there’s Number One, Number Two, and so on. We thought that was dreadful. We didn’t want to call you Number One.

There are other dragon families where the children are simply named "Child of". You would then be Eldest Child of Long Feng or Long Hai. We didn’t like that either.

We thought for a long time about what to call you. One thing was already clear when you hatched from your egg: one day, you would be able to fly. So we decided to call you Feilong – flying dragon – for now.

You will receive another name once it becomes clear what kind of dragon you’ll eventually become.»

«Hmm,» Feilong nodded.
«I could get used to Long Bing,» he added.

«Just wait and see. Perhaps you’ll become the next Long Feng.»

His father grew thoughtful.
«Whatever you become, I’ll always be proud of you. You’re my son. Whether you follow in my footsteps or turn out to be a completely different kind of dragon, time will tell. But I’ll always be proud that this dragon is my son.»

«Thank you, Papa. That’s really kind of you.»
