15 – Conversations Between Father and Son

«There’s something I’d like to talk to you about,» the father began.
«It became clear today that you’re not going to be a water dragon. Even though she doesn’t show it, I believe that fact may affect your mother a little.
I know your mother feels the same way I do about it: she will always be proud of her son, no matter what kind of dragon he turns out to be. But still, at first it can be a little sad when a child doesn’t develop in the same direction as oneself. It takes a bit of time to digest that.
So, over the next few days and weeks, be especially kind to your mother. Let her work through the sadness.»
Feilong thought for a moment.
«Do you really think she’s sad? How would you have felt if it had turned out that I was more of a water dragon than a wind dragon?»
His father didn’t have to think long.
«You really surprised me today. I’d always assumed you’d be more of a water dragon. When your mother told me you take more after me than after her: that was an incredible feeling.
On the one hand, I was delighted. On the other hand, I’m much more worried about you now. To be honest, I’m still a bit overwhelmed by it all.»
«All right, Papa, it’s fine,» Feilong burst out.
«I’ll be extra nice to you in the next few days and weeks. Promise!»
His father laughed and handed him the cloth.
«Tie yourself in again, please. We’re almost there. We’re about to dive down.»
