21 – Wind and Warmth

 

A dragon with dark scales shimmering in shades of purple and violet came towards Feilong.

«Greetings, Long Fei. I’m the thermal attendant in charge here. We are in the chamber of the thermal furnace. Please, go to your father and let the warmth dry your scales.»

«Greetings, Thermal Attendant, and thank you for this opportunity,» replied Feilong politely, then turned to his cousin.
«Will you come with me?»

«Oh no, it’s far too dry for me in here. Go on to your father. I’ll leave you now.»

The two nodded to each other, and the cousin left the chamber while Feilong went to his father and did the same. He spread his wings wide and let the warmth dry them.

Father and son stood side by side in silence. Feilong enjoyed the moment. It felt as though he had spoken more today than in his whole life before.

The thermal attendant approached them. Both looked at him questioningly.

«I have instructions from Long Hai to leave the two of you alone in this chamber. I’m to close the door as I go. Do you know how the door mechanism works, so that you can open it yourselves if needed?»

Father looked towards the door.
«Yes, I’m quite familiar with the mechanism. Thank you.»

The thermal attendant left the chamber and closed the door behind him.

«There are thousands of reasons why I love your mother. This is one of them!» burst out Father suddenly.

«Dad, I don’t understand what you mean,» said Feilong.

Father looked at him.
«I’m a Wind Dragon, and you, you’ve already shown me that you can blow wind quite well yourself. Our scales dry much faster if we make a proper wind in here.»

Father blew a strong gust of wind across the chamber. Feilong did the same.

Father began to shiver dramatically.
«All right, Long Bing, that’s for sure! Your wind is icy cold!» he said with a smile.
«But your wind-blowing technique is already very good.»

After a few minutes, all their scales were dry, and the two of them left the chamber.
